You can ride an electric unicycle in winter within your maker's temperature range, but expect less range and less power, and never charge a cold battery. InMotion says cold weather cuts range by 20 to 40%, gives 14°F (-10°C) as the V10's lowest working temperature, and says not to charge below freezing. Bring the wheel indoors to warm up before charging, keep it out of slush and heavy rain, wipe off salt, and for the off-season store it indoors and dry at the charge level your manual specifies, charging it at least monthly if your maker says so.
Temperature limits
InMotion's V10 manual is the most complete set of figures we found from a maker. Other models have their own limits in their manuals; check yours.
| Situation | InMotion V10 figure |
|---|---|
| Working (riding) temperature | 14 to 104°F (-10 to 40°C) |
| Charging | Not below 32°F (0°C); charge in a warm place, 50 to 95°F (10 to 35°C) |
| Suggested storage temperature | 14 to 95°F (-10 to 35°C) |
| Battery environment limits | -4 to 113°F (-20 to 45°C); below -4°F the battery self-locks and cannot be charged or used |
| Alarm while riding in the cold | Warm the wheel indoors for at least 30 minutes before riding again |
Riding in the cold
Range and power
InMotion's service guide puts the cold-weather range loss at 20 to 40%. Cold cells also deliver less power, which narrows the margin before tiltback or an overpower cutout; see cutouts and tiltback explained. Plan winter rides with that margin, and use our range calculator with a higher energy-per-mile figure than you use in summer. King Song's winter guide suggests keeping the battery between 30% and 90% during winter and using a thermal cover or insulated wrap to protect the battery when riding in sub-zero temperatures.
Tires and traction
King Song warns that low temperatures can reduce tire pressure and make the ride unstable, so check pressure before cold rides. An EUC has one tire and brakes only through it, so ice and packed snow leave very little grip; slow down well before corners and stops, or wait for clear pavement. Our tire guide lists the pressures makers give.
Water, slush and salt
Winter roads add water and salt. King Song says even water-resistant models like the S22 Pro should not be submerged in water or slush, describes the S22 Pro's IP54 rating as splash resistance for light rain and damp roads, and says water damage is typically not covered under warranty. InMotion's V10 manual says not to ride in a rainstorm, and InMotion's Service Center warranty lists submersion and riding in heavy rain among the things that void it. King Song recommends wiping the exterior with a damp cloth after every ride, because dirt, salt and moisture can lead to corrosion.
Charging in winter
Charging a cold battery is the main winter risk. InMotion says not to charge below 0°C (32°F) and to charge in a warm environment, 10 to 35°C; King Song says to always charge at room temperature. UL Solutions lists charging in extreme cold or heat among the causes of lithium-ion thermal runaway, and UL Standards and Engagement says not to charge batteries in extremely hot or cold temperatures.
- Bring the wheel indoors after a cold ride.
- Wipe off water, slush and salt, and keep water away from the charging port.
- Let it come up to room temperature before you plug it in.
- Charge with the maker's charger, plugged into a wall outlet, in a room you are in, away from exits, as the FDNY advises.
The CPSC's review of battery standards describes thermal cycling tests that simulate moving a pack from an unheated garage in winter into a heated house, so this is a known stress on battery packs. Our charging time calculator helps you plan a charge you can supervise.
Storing your wheel for the off-season
Makers disagree on the storage charge level, so follow your wheel's manual:
| InMotion (V10 manual) | King Song (winter guide) | |
|---|---|---|
| Charge level for storage | Fully charge before storage | Around 50% for long periods |
| Top-up schedule | Charge at least once a month | Not stated in the guide |
| Where | Dry room at suitable temperature and humidity; suggested -10 to 35°C | Dry, warm environment |
| How long it can sit | Up to 180 days fully charged, 30 days at one bar, before risking irreversible damage | Not stated in the guide |
Whichever level your manual gives, do not let the battery run flat in storage. InMotion's V10 manual excludes battery damage from missed monthly charging from its warranty, and its Service Center policy excludes deep discharge from failing to charge for extended periods. The CPSC notes that UL 2272-24 requires a "Store Indoors When Not In Use" marking on devices with plastic enclosures not evaluated for sun and rain.
Storage checklist:
- Clean and dry the wheel, including around the charging port.
- Set the charge level your manual specifies.
- Store indoors, dry, away from heaters and direct sun, and not in a hallway or by a door you would use to escape; the FDNY says never to block your way in or out.
- Put a reminder in your calendar to check and top up the charge as your manual requires.
- Check tire pressure before the first spring ride.
Waking it up in spring
- Charge it fully at room temperature, supervised, before the first ride.
- Inflate the tire to your maker's pressure and look for cracks or flat spots.
- Check the shell, pedals and charging port for damage or looseness, as InMotion's V10 manual asks before every ride.
- Open the maker's app and install any firmware update, then confirm your speed alarms and tiltback settings.
- Ride a short, slow loop before your usual route.

Frequently asked questions
Can you ride an electric unicycle in winter?
Yes, within your maker's temperature range. InMotion's V10 manual gives a working range down to 14 degrees F (-10 C), and InMotion says cold cuts range by 20 to 40%. Avoid ice, slush and heavy rain, and check tire pressure, since King Song warns cold lowers it.
Can I charge my EUC in the cold?
No. InMotion says not to charge below 0 C (32 F) and to charge in a warm place between 10 and 35 C, and King Song says to always charge at room temperature. Bring the wheel indoors and let it warm up before plugging it in.
How much range do electric unicycles lose in the cold?
InMotion's service guide says cold weather reduces range by 20 to 40%. Cold also reduces available power, so keep more battery in reserve and slow down earlier than you would in summer.
How should I store my electric unicycle over the winter?
Indoors, dry and away from heat and exits, at the charge level your manual gives. InMotion's V10 manual says to fully charge before storage and charge at least monthly; King Song's winter guide says around 50% for long storage. Do not let the battery run flat.
Is it OK to ride an electric unicycle in snow or slush?
Makers advise against water and slush exposure. King Song says even water-resistant models should not be submerged in water or slush and that water damage is typically not covered, and InMotion's Service Center warranty excludes heavy rain and submersion. A single tire also gives little grip on snow and ice.
What happens to an EUC battery in extreme cold?
Performance drops and charging becomes unsafe. InMotion's V10 manual says the battery self-locks below -20 C (-4 F) and cannot be charged or used until it is warmed, and that if an alarm sounds while riding in the cold you should warm the wheel indoors for at least 30 minutes.
