Electric Unicycle Maintenance Checklist: What to Check and When

An electric unicycle needs little routine work, but the little it needs matters: check tire pressure, battery level, pedals and the shell before rides; wipe it clean with a damp cloth instead of hosing it; charge a stored wheel at least monthly (InMotion's rule for the V10); keep firmware current through the maker's app; and use only the maker's charger. Leave anything inside the battery or controller to authorized service. The checklist below is built from InMotion's and King Song's manuals, guides and warranty terms.

The checklist

Cleaning

InMotion's V10 manual gives the routine: switch the wheel off, unplug the charger and close the charging port, then wipe the shell with a soft cloth dipped in clean water. Keep water out of the charging port and do not use a high-pressure jet. The V10 is rated IP55, which InMotion describes as splash-proof and dustproof, and it says the wheel must not be dipped in water.

King Song is equally firm. It describes the S22 Pro's IP54 rating as splash resistance for light rain and damp roads, says it should not be ridden through deep water, heavy rain or flooded roads or washed with high-pressure water, and says water damage is typically not covered under warranty. InMotion's Service Center warranty policy lists submersion, riding in heavy rain and pressure washing among the things that void it.

Tires

Keep the tire at the pressure your manual gives: InMotion's V10 manual sets 2.8 bar (about 41 psi) as its factory default and says to inflate in time when low, while King Song recommends 30 to 40 psi on the S22 Pro depending on rider weight. Look for cuts, bulges and worn tread. Some suspension wheels come with a high-pressure pump; InMotion says the V9's pump inflates the suspension and can top up the tire in a pinch. Our tire guide covers sizes, tubes and tubeless.

Pedals and fasteners

InMotion's V10 manual says loose pedals make riding uncomfortable and can even cause a fall, and gives the fix for that model: tighten the screws on the pedal axis and its side edge with M10 and M6 Allen drivers. Other wheels use different fasteners, so check your own manual before you reach for a tool.

Battery care

  • Charge only with the maker's charger. InMotion's Service Center warranty is void for damage from third-party chargers, fast chargers or any charger InMotion did not certify or make. Where a maker allows faster charging, stay within its limit; InMotion recommends a maximum of 5 A for the V9.
  • Do not let it sit empty. InMotion says a fully charged V10 can stand for up to 180 days, but one at a single bar only 30 days, before risking irreversible damage. Its Service Center warranty also excludes deep discharge from failing to charge for extended periods.
  • Watch range over time. InMotion's service guide suggests considering a battery replacement if range falls below 60% of the original.
  • Stop at warning signs. The V10 manual says to stop the wheel immediately if the battery leaks, smells, smokes or overheats, and never to open the battery yourself.

Our battery safety guide covers charging and storage practice from the FDNY and the CPSC.

Firmware and calibration

InMotion's V10 manual lists firmware upgrades and fault detection among its app's functions, and King Song's app lists firmware updates, horizontal calibration and ride and safety settings. Follow the maker's update steps exactly. If the pedals no longer sit level after an update or a crash, run the maker's calibration.

What to leave to service

InMotion's V10 manual tells owners not to modify or repair the wheel unless authorized and to contact after-sales service when something is wrong; it also routes tire replacement after a burst to an authorized dealer or InMotion service. Its Service Center warranty lists firmware hacking, shunting batteries and cutting wires among the modifications that void it, and warns that controllers, motors and circuit boards damaged by improper installation are not covered. Battery packs, controllers and motor work belong with the maker or an authorized dealer.

Keep a log

Note the date of each charge before storage, each firmware update, each tire change and any fault. It helps with warranty claims, it shows battery range falling over time, and it gives a buyer a record if you sell. Our used EUC checklist lists what buyers check, and our warranty comparison covers what each maker excludes. Frequently asked questions

How often should I maintain my electric unicycle?

Look it over before every ride, check tire pressure weekly, check pedal bolts monthly, and charge a stored wheel at least once a month, which is InMotion's rule for the V10. Update firmware when the maker's app prompts you, and calibrate after crashes or updates.

Can I wash my electric unicycle with a hose?

No. InMotion's V10 manual says to wipe the shell with a soft cloth dipped in clean water and not to use a high-pressure jet or let water into the charging port. King Song says the S22 Pro should not be washed with high-pressure water and that water damage is typically not covered, and InMotion's Service Center warranty excludes pressure washing.

What voids an electric unicycle warranty?

Terms differ by maker. InMotion's Service Center policy lists third-party or fast chargers, submersion or heavy rain, pressure washing, stunts or exceeding limits, firmware hacking or battery shunting, deep discharge from neglect, and crash damage. Check your own maker's terms before modifying anything.

How do I know when my EUC battery needs replacing?

Track your range on familiar routes. InMotion's service guide suggests considering a battery replacement when range drops below 60% of the original. Stop using the wheel at once if the battery leaks, smells, smokes or overheats, and contact the maker.

Why are my EUC pedals loose and how do I fix them?

Pedal fasteners can work loose over time. InMotion's V10 manual says loose pedals can cause a fall and gives the fix for that model, tightening the axis and side screws with M10 and M6 Allen drivers. Check your own manual for your wheel's fasteners.

Do I need to update my electric unicycle's firmware?

Keep it current. InMotion and King Song both deliver firmware through their apps, and King Song's app also handles horizontal calibration. Follow the maker's steps exactly and calibrate afterward if the pedals do not sit level.
